Philip Gibbons
After 48 years in the same broadcast market, the name Philip Gibbons is synonymous with radio throughout middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. Philip’s lifetime in radio was recognized when he was inducted into the 2019 Class of the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame. The Philip Gibbons radio show on WGSQ can be heard in 49 counties throughout Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. Located in Cookeville, TN, his mid-day show is heard by approximately 126,000 listeners in 49 counties each week. In 2020 Philip won the CRS/Countryaircheck Small Market Personality of the Year award and was recently nominated by The Academy of Country Music as Small Market Personality of the Year!
Philip has become an unmistakable voice and presence throughout his community, and he plays an active role in a number of local organizations. He is always willing to lend his voice to help organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Alzheimer’s Tennessee, and the American Cancer Society. He was chosen to be a “Pink Tie Guy” in the Upper Cumberland for Susan G. Komen, helping raise money and bring awareness in the fight against breast cancer. In 2018, Philip took to the airwaves, and his listeners helped raise over $3,000 in support of a co-worker who was battling breast cancer. He also helped raised over $10,000 for Alzheimer’s Tennessee, a local organization aiding families who are battling various forms of dementia. Philip was broadcasting his show “live” from the Holiday Inn Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida, just days before Hurricane Michael devastated the area. He helped organize a local effort by partnering with a trucking company, and the WGSQ listeners generously packed an 18-wheeler with needed supplies to aid during the hurricane cleanup.
In addition to his charitable community efforts, Philip has served as guest announcer on the Grand Ole Opry for 14 consecutive years on WGSQ’s special night, and he has had the honor of hosting at CMA Fest on the Chevy Riverfront Stage numerous times. Whether inviting a new artist for their first radio interview, or interviewing a legendary classic country artist, Philip has represented the country music genre well for the last 48 years, and he continues to raise the bar high in the radio industry. His involvement and willingness to volunteer his time to charitable causes does not go unnoticed by the listeners of WGSQ and the people in his community.
